When you’re planning a print project—whether it’s a children’s book, art book, novel, or anything in between—choosing the right finish is just as important as the paper or binding. One excellent option we offer here at PufferPrint is Aqueous Coating. It gives your print that polished look, helps protect it, and still keeps everything eco-conscious.

Aqueous coating is a fast-drying, water-based finish applied to printed material right after the ink. The solution is ‘flooded’ across the entire surface, and as the water evaporates, it leaves behind a thin layer of polymers that form a clear protective film. This coating guards your book against minor scuffs, scratches, and wear while also enhancing the look of your artwork.

Just like film laminate, aqueous coating comes in both matte and glossy:

• Gloss finish – Bright, shiny, smooth, glossy finishes makes colors pop and adds high visual impact. Great for vibrant art or illustration‐heavy books.
• Matte finish – Soft and elegant, matte finishes are great for a more natural look or if glare is a concern.

The Benefits and Limitations of Aqueous Coating

• Eco‐Friendly: Our favorite thing about aqueous coating it’s low environmental impact. Aqueous coated paper is recyclable and biodegradable. And since it is water based there are lower solvent emissions and VOCs (volatile organic compounds) that are released into the air as the coating dries when compared to UV varnish.

• Durable: Aqueous coating offers good resistance to scuffs and scratches, but it’s a little less durable than UV coatings or laminates—particularly when it comes to heavy abrasion, liquid spilled on books, or long‐term outdoor exposure.

• Full Coverage Only: Unlike UV varnish, aqueous coating must cover the entire surface (“flood coat”). You can’t apply it to specific areas – that’s what our Spot UV is for!

• A More Subdued Gloss: If you want ultra‐high gloss, our glossy UV varnish or glossy film lamination will deliver more shine than aqueous gloss.
