Spot UV
Make Your Book Shine!
Sometimes it’s the little things that make a big difference—and Spot UV is one of those finishing touches that can make your book truly stand out. At PufferPrint, we offer Spot UV as a premium print enhancement that adds visual interest and tactile appeal to your books cover, dust jacket, or slip case. Whether you’re printing a children’s book, graphic novel, art book, or planner, Spot UV can help elevate your design from great to unforgettable.
What Is Spot UV?
Spot UV is a high-gloss coating applied to specific areas of your printed book—usually to draw attention to specific areas such as the title or important elements of your artwork. It’s applied on top of a matte laminate to create contrast, giving the coated areas a slightly raised surface and high gloss shine that reflects light and stands out against the non-glossy background.
This effect is achieved by applying a liquid UV coating to designated areas and then instantly curing it with ultraviolet light.
Technical Considerations
When preparing your files for spot UV, we’ll ask you to provide a separate grayscale file that shows exactly where you want the gloss applied—black for glossed areas and white for non-glossed. Our team can guide you through this process or even create the gloss layer for you as part of our file formatting service.
Spot UV works best on thicker surfaces so we only recommend it for book covers (both hardcovers and softcovers), dust jackets, slip cases, and board book pages.
Spot UV on Children’s Books
Spot UV is especially popular on children’s books and board books, where the extra shine and tactile dimension can engage young readers. It’s also a great way to enhance cookbooks, journals, graphic novels, and coffee table books—any project where design plays a central role in the reading experience.
