Country of Origin
Adding “Printed in China” to Your Files
At PufferPrint, we’ve got the printing process down to a science, making sure everything runs smoothly from start to finish. Part of that involves sticking to US trade laws and regulations. While you’ll be working with our US-based team of Print Specialists, our print facilities are based overseas in China (near Beijing). Printing overseas ensures you get bookstore-quality books at an affordable price.
Because we print your books in China, you will need to have a country of origin marking in your book. That might sound confusing, but it just means putting the text “Printed in China” somewhere in your print files. Major publishers print the majority of their books overseas, so if you grab a random book off of your bookshelf you’ll almost certainly find a country of origin marking on the copyright page or back cover.
While you might be tempted to omit the country of origin mark in your print files, this can lead to delays clearing US customs, fines, or even having your shipment turned back. Following these guidelines will ensure that your books reach you promptly and hassle-free.
What Text Should I Use?

“Printed in China” is the simplest version of the required country of origin marking and what most of our authors use. The other popular option is “Manufactured in China”.
While there is a requirement is that the text be legible and conspicuous, the exact wording offers a bit of flexibility. Some authors like to use the phrase “Designed in the USA. Printed in China.” And we always appreciate the love if you choose to use the phrase “Printed in China by PufferPrint”!
PufferPrint also makes sure that we’re printing your books the most sustainable way possible. So feel free to include the fact that your books are printed on FSC-certified paper, that the inks are all soy-based, or that PufferPrint is climate neutral. You could use something like “Sustainably printed in China on FSC-certified paper with soy-based inks!” or “Printed in China by PufferPrint, a climate neutral company”.
Where Should I Put It?
The law states that the country of origin marking must be “legible and conspicuous”, but it’s fine to keep it as a subtle element in your design. Typically authors add it to the text on their copyright page or, if your book doesn’t have a copyright page, you can put it towards the bottom of the back cover. Just make sure it is a decent size font (no smaller than 8pt) and that it has enough contrast with the background to make it readable.
Country of Origin Marking for Card Sets
Card sets with packaging must have the country of origin marking on the outside of the box or package. Most customers opt to simply print it on the bottom of the box.
If your card set doesn’t include a box and is only shrink-wrapped, the country of origin can be printed on the first or last card, facing outward. This ensures the marking is visible through the clear shrink wrap.
Final Thoughts
The country of origin mark serves as a small but essential detail that keeps everything compliant with U.S. trade laws. It’s crucial in making sure your books are delivered without any issues. If you have any concerns please don’t hesitate to email us or schedule a call. We always happy to answer questions!
